Driving around in the middle of the night can be a peaceful experience. Being able to drive when there is less traffic and no distractions means that you can zip down the road more easily than during daylight hours. The one worry that many night drivers have is breaking down in the middle of the night. Having an engine issue or having a tire burst means that you will have to pull over and wait for a tow in order to make it back home. In the middle of the night, this can be scarier than ever. To be sure you keep safe, here are some precautions that you should take when you are waiting for a tow in the middle of the night.
Put on your flashers and your brights
Using your bright lights is uncommon unless you are driving in a hazardous or deserted area. When your car breaks down in the middle of the night, you will need to put on your bright lights and your hazard lights, or flashers. This will alert cars that are coming up behind to your position on the road. This is especially important if you are on a busy highway where cars tend to drive quickly and need time to stop or slow.
Stay inside of the vehicle
After you have called for a tow truck to come to your location, one of the best ways to keep yourself safe is to stay inside of your vehicle. It is much more difficult to see a person who is on the road than a person, even in a residential neighborhood. If you are on a highway, staying with your car will be important to ensure that it is not stolen while you are waiting for a tow.
Collect personal information from the vehicle
As your vehicle is sitting on the roadside, you should stay inside and collect any of your personal information that is in the vehicle. If you are being towed to a repair shop, you will need to make sure that if the car is opened or burglarized, the person will not have any of your personal information. Take your insurance information, license, work badges, and any other information and keep it on your person. This will make sure that your things and your car are safe when being parked overnight.
